Affordable Housing all over the US and particularly in Comal County, is at an all time high risk. As your local Habitat for Humanity we are working on many critical projects and initiatives – building and repairing homes, closing on real estate projects and breaking ground on others! The world is changing, but one thing is sure to stay the same for many of us: Home and its importance to successful and secure lives.  The families we  serve are already vulnerable; many of them in positions at the forefront of the COVID-19 Crisis: health care workers, civil servants, service sector employees… those to whom a missed paycheck can mean catastrophe.

The New Braunfels Workforce Housing Advisory Committee revealed that 35% of New Braunfels households are considered “cost-burdened,” with over 30% of their income going to housing costs. In 2019 households in Comal would have had to work 91 hours per week at minimum wage to afford a one-bedroom apartment priced on average at $1,015 per month at fair market rent. This was an increase from 85 hours needed per week in 2018, which reflects the growing housing rental prices. For single-family households or elderly residents without a steady income, or on a fixed low income, this amount is simply out of reach.

This Habitat for Humanity chapter servicing Comal County provides housing at a total cost that is $300 -$700 per month and builds homes valued at less than half of the national average. Comal County Habitat is performing a much needed service. The need for our work will only increase as housing prices continue to creep (and sometimes leap) higher. In 2019, Comal County Habitat for Humanity saw an increased need for assistance with affordable home repairs for low income families. With support from our community, we expanded our services to include repairs for deteriorating homes, allowing more of our neighbors to live in safe, decent shelter.

During this time, we call on our neighbors and community partners to help us help others. If you had intended to give to Habitat – if you intended to volunteer, to visit the ReStore, or to donate – please show your support with your time and contributions to keep us building a better community.

Thank you for supporting Comal County Habitat for Humanity.
